A HAUNTING image of Michael Jackson's lifeless body lying on a hospital bed was shown to jurors today in the trial of the doctor accused of killing the star with an overdose.
His pale body was seen lying on a gurney after he died from an overdose of a powerful anesthetic.

Adoring Jackson fans were massed outside the court in America as the highly anticipated case of Dr Conrad Murray finally began.

    Star ... Michael Jackson
Deputy district attorney David Walgren displayed the picture that appeared to show tape or tubing over Jackson's face.

Prosecutor Mr Walgren said: "The evidence will show that Michael Jackson literally put his life in the hands of Conrad Murray. Michael Jackson trusted his life to the medical skills of Conrad Murray.

"The evidence will show that misplaced trust had far too high a price to pay... it cost Michael Jackson his life."

An incredible recording was played to the court in which the star slurred his speech and was clearly under the influence of drugs.

Dr Murray is accused of giving the troubled star a lethal dose of the surgical anesthetic propofol and then failing to monitor him as he died from what a coroner labelled "acute propofol intoxication".

The physician's lawyers claim Jackson - a chronic insomniac - was so desperate for sleep he drank the drug, which he called 'milk' while the doctor wasn't looking.

Mr Walgren said the recording showed Dr Murray knew what impact his treatment was having on the singer.

Murray made the recording on his iPhone on May 10 2009 at 9.05am.

In it Jackson says: "We have to be phenomenal.

"When people leave my show I want them to say 'I've never seen nothing like this in my life. He's amazing. He's the greatest entertainer in the world'.

"I'm taking that money, a million children, children's hospital the biggest in the world. Michael Jackson's Children's Hospital."

Mr Walgren said Dr Murray failed to tell two emergency room doctors about the propofol Jackson had taken as they attempted to save him."

Dr Murray's defence lawyer claimed Jackson caused his own death by taking a drug while his doctor was out of the room.

Ed Chernoff said: "He did an act without his doctor's knowledge, without his doctor's permission, against his orders. He did an act that caused his own death."

Mr Chernoff said Jackson created a "perfect storm in his body" that killed him instantly when he took propofol after taking several lorazepam pills to send him to sleep.

In early submissions the court heard Murray asked for $5million to look after Jackson on the This Is It concert extravaganza as the O2 Arena in London.

Jackson flatly refused and offered him instead $150,000 a month.

    In dock ... Conrad Murray
The King of Pop's family including parents Katherine and Joe and siblings Jermaine, La Toya, Janet and Tito were at the packed Los Angeles court room to hear Murray defend his actions in the hours before Jacko died aged just 50.

Riled crowds surrounded the building in support of Jackson, some linking hands to pray.

Someone in the crowd shouted "murderer!" as Murray made his way into the building.

Others stood nearby in support of the medic.

One placard read: "We stand up for Dr. Murray."

Murray, 58, has denied involuntary manslaughter but faces up to four years in jail if convicted.

A verdict is expected at the end of next month.

We told today how two thirds of the jury are fans of the late singer.

Around 400 potential jurors for his trial, which starts in Los Angeles today, had to complete a 30-page questionnaire.

    Sister ... Janet Jackson
One of the questions was: "Have you ever considered yourself a fan of Michael Jackson or the Jackson family?" And the answers from the seven men and five women finally selected have emerged, showing eight are or were fans.

WATCH LIVE COVERAGE OF THE TRIAL

One Mexican-American woman loved Jacko's music as a child. Another juror admitted particularly liking Thriller.
The panel, aged from 32 to 57, is made up of six white jurors, five Hispanic and one African-American.

Defence lawyer Michael Flanagan insisted he was happy with the final 12.

Brother ... Jermaine Jackson arriving at court
The prosecution claims Murray killed Jacko at the singer's rented LA home on June 25, 2009.

Yesterday Murray's lawyers failed to get his final news conference in London used as evidence. They claimed the video of Jacko announcing his O2 comeback shows him "under the influence" three months before his death.

Parents ... Katherine Jackson and Joe Jackson arrive at court
But judge Michael Pastor said it was "not relevant to what may or may not have happened". Murray denies involuntary manslaughter. He has admitted giving Jacko sedatives, including powerful Propofol, to help him sleep but denies it was enough to kill him.

His lawyers will argue Jacko administered the fatal dose himself when the doctor was out of the room.

A verdict is expected at the end of next month. The trial continues.

Michael Jackson ‘was killed by his own perfect
    storm of drugs’
Defence tells Conrad Murray trial: Star caused death
From PETE SAMSON, US Editor at Los Angeles Superior Court

MICHAEL Jackson was killed by a "perfect storm in his body" after recklessly gulping drugs behind his doctor's back, it was claimed last night.
The trial of his personal physician Conrad Murray heard how the medic's defence against killing the superstar with an overdose is that he REFUSED to ramp up Jacko's sedatives.

The insomniac singer was allegedly left so "frustrated" that he secretly took eight 2mg doses of lorazepam plus the powerful drug propofol.

Sister ... Janet Jackson at court
Hours later Jacko was found dead from the lethal cocktail.

Murray's lawyer Ed Chernoff told the jury at the doctor's trial in Los Angeles the lorazepam alone was "enough to put six of you to sleep".

Mr Chernoff said: "He did an act that caused his own death.

"When Dr Murray left the room Michael Jackson self-administered a dose of propofol that with the lorazepam created a perfect storm in his body that killed him instantly.

"When Dr Murray came into the room and found Michael Jackson there was no CPR, there was no doctor, paramedic, no machine that was going to revive Michael Jackson.

    Grief ... LaToya Jackson
"He died so rapidly, so instantly, he didn't even have time to close his eyes."

The lawyer added: "The amounts Dr Murray gave were not capable of causing that death. Michael Jackson swallowed up to eight pills on his own and self-administered an additional dose of propofol.

"It killed him like that and there was no way to save him."

Mr Chernoff said: "Dr Murray is not a perfect man, but in this criminal forum we believe he is not guilty."

    Protest ... tearful fan
Murray, 58, wept yesterday as the defence told of his relationship with the King of Pop. The doctor insists he was trying to wean Jacko off propofol — used to sedate hospital patients.

But the Thriller singer was said to have been suffering from "an absolute, total and thorough inability to sleep".

Jacko's problems were allegedly compounded by an addiction to the dangerous painkiller demerol. Murray's lawyer accused the star's long-time dermatologist Arnold Klein of getting him hooked on it.

Jacko's dad Joseph, 82, and mum Katherine, 81, heard the grim details of their son's drug hell described to the jury.

    Condemned ... banner blasting doctor
Brothers Tito, 57, Jermaine, 56, and Randy, 49, also attended the long-awaited opening of the doctor's trial — along with the star's sisters LaToya, 55, and Janet, 45.

Fans of Jacko handed the family sunflowers — the singer's favourite blooms — as they arrived at Los Angeles Superior Court in a convoy of blacked-out vehicles.

Jermaine flashed a peace sign at the hordes — many wielding placards demanding justice for their idol. Banners condemning Murray over Jacko's death included some branding Murray an "animal".

T-shirts bearing his face dubbed him "Dr Death".

Dad ... Joseph Jackson arrives at LA court
The Jacksons headed into court via the main steps. In contrast, Murray and his entourage, which included his mum, used a side entrance.

Around a dozen of the doctor's supporters had gathered outside court to back him. They included his admin assistant Stacey Ruggles, who held a sign proclaiming: "My mentor. My friend. My brother. My strength." She described Murray as being "very positive" the trial will clear him.

Flags waved by Jacko's fans showed they had jetted in from as far away as Chile, Malaysia, Romania and Holland.

    Mum ... Katherine Jackson
Tammy Jo, 42, who travelled more than 1,000 miles from Oklahoma, said: "We're here for justice for Michael." April Smith, 46, said 18 years after protesting outside court at the singer's child-sex trial: "I was there to support Michael in 1993 and I am here to support him today."

During a break in proceedings LaToya Jackson took to Twitter to describe her reaction to Deputy District Attorney David Walgren outlining the case against Murray — which included a picture of Jacko on a hospital trolley.

She declared: "I feel like screaming. It sickens me to see what they did to my brother. Seeing his lifeless body laying there on the gurney is heart wrenching."

    A dodgy spell
    By CHRIS POLLARD

CONRAD Murray's defence lawyers got off to a bad start — spelling the King of Pop's name wrong.

In opening his case, Murray's lead attorney Ed Chernoff showed jurors a slide which read: "The two questions defense needs to answer."

Incredibly the first read: "How did Micheal Jackson get to this point?" The little-known lawyer didn't even notice it should have read "Michael".

Mr Chernoff, 49, looked nervous as he stumbled through his opening speech in LA.

He contrasted starkly with slick prosecutor David Walgren whose clients have included actress Cameron Diaz.

The charismatic lawyer opened with an animated slideshow setting out his case. Mr Chernoff's slide was a crude card placard propped on an easel.

His second question to the court was: "What happened after Dr Murray left the room?"

    The lawyers

Counsel ... David Walgren, and right, Ed Chernoff
TWO lawyers yesterday took centre stage in one of the most eagerly anticipated televised court cases in history.

Small-time lawyer Ed Chernoff's job is to combat deputy district attorney David Walgren's assertion that Dr Conrad Murray administered the lethal dose of propofol to Michael Jackson — then neglected his duty of care by leaving the room.

    Here's how they shape up:

    Star attorney
POLISHED Los Angeles deputy district attorney David Walgren is at home in the public eye.

In 2009, he fought off Oscar-winning director Roman Polanski's efforts to have his 1977 child sex case dismissed. In 2005, he successfully prosecuted a snapper who tried to sell topless shots of actress Cameron Diaz back to her.

    Big-time debut
LITTLE-known Ed Chernoff was drafted in to help Conrad Murray during police interviews — then find the doctor a top attorney.

But one was never found, so the dad of two, 49, of Houston, Texas, took on his biggest ever case. The lawyer — treated by Murray for chest pains during preparations — said clients see him as a "friend".
