It took how long? Cheryl Cole has described how painful her rose tattoo was and explained she spent 15 hours under the needle to achieve the look
Tatts new! Cheryl Cole debuts a pair of red roses on her back during the concert in her hometown of Newcastle
Some fans believe Miss Cole – who has previously said she is addicted to tattoos – may have drawn the line at this one and opted for a temporary transfer.
One tweeted optimistically: ‘I hope that tattoo is fake you massive chav.’ Another harshly described the design as ‘vile’, adding: ‘Talk about a tramp stamp.’
The star’s agent inexplicably refused to comment, but celebrity tattoo artist Chris Jones insisted the inking was real, the handiwork of renowned California-based artist Nikko Hurtado.
Mr Jones said: ‘He specialises in realism and his work is amazing. He said he tattooed her for two days, six to eight hours a day maybe, and was amazed she sat for it.’
The roses cover up a previous tattoo of a black butterfly Miss Cole, 29, had done in 2011. Though less than half the size of the roses, it still took 11 hours to complete.
Speaking about it at the time she described the butterfly as being ‘deeply personal’ and signifying ‘a fresh start’. Well, so much for that.
She's an angel: Cheryl Cole donned a variety of skimpy outfits for the show - including a daring midriff baring tutu
Although there may still be some symbolism here. Some believe the roses represent Miss Cole’s excitement at her blossoming relationship with dancer Tre Holloway.
Thursday night’s concert was the first of 21 dates for Girls Aloud. Addressing her home city crowd Miss Cole, said: ‘There’s nowhere I’d rather be right now.’
Apart from a flowerbed, perhaps?
Speaking backstage at the Metro Radio Arena Cheryl told The Sun: 'It was really painful but I think I'm done with tattoos now. It wasn't for any particular reason, I just liked the design.'
She added: 'It took 15 hours in total.'
The 29-year-old joined Kimberley Walsh, Nadine Coyle, Nicola Roberts and Sarah Harding onstage for the show in Newcastle.
The singer is known for revealing her body art through her music - she previously unveiled her ninth tattoo, barbed wire around her leg during the music video for Call My Name.
Cheryl has previously shown off a tattoo on her left bottom cheek and the new body art appears to stem from her old design.
