It was a bittersweet occasion when Danielle Howard married Chris Watson.
Everyone there knew the 22-year-old bride was battling advanced cervical cancer and had only a one-in-seven chance of surviving.
But an uplifting note was provided by the fact that hundreds of well-wishers – many complete strangers – had paid £5,000 for the wedding and contributed £6,000 towards specialist cancer treatment. Chef Gordon Ramsay had given his backing on Twitter for a fundraising auction.
A few weeks after the ceremony, however, compassion turned to surprise and then suspicion after the new Mrs Watson announced on Twitter that she was cured – and had become pregnant.
She told stunned followers on the social networking site: ‘This may be hard for people to believe but it’s been harder for me to believe.’ Now, three months after her wedding, she has been arrested at her home in Billericay, Essex, as part of a fraud inquiry.
The fraud investigation is believed to be focused on £6,000 raised for a holistic cancer treatment known as vitamin C intravenous therapy.
Mrs Watson, who has worked as a PA at the Financial Services Authority, was released on bail until August 6.
Her struggle against stage four cervical cancer became front page news locally in April after she launched a campaign to raise money for a specialist cancer treatment not available on the NHS.
Mrs Watson told local newspapers she was diagnosed with cancer in January 2012 and had been given a 15 per cent chance of survival before beginning treatment.
Local businesses backed the young woman’s fundraising campaign resulting in the donation of £6,000 for treatment.
Fundraising events were held by friends who contacted TV presenters Fearne Cotton and Holly Willoughby to ask for help, reported The Sun.
Celebrity chef Gordon Ramsey gave his support through social networking site Twitter to a fundraising auction.

Speaking about her illness, she told a local paper: 'As soon as I was told I had stage four cancer I thought about Jade Goody and what happened to her. She was older than me and she still died. Is this going to happen to me?
'A 15 per cent chance doesn’t sound a lot to most people, but to me it’s all I have. I’m not giving up.
'I’m 21 and have my whole life ahead of me. I want to build a life with Chris and have children. I want to live.'
Earlier this month Mrs Watson’s battle with terminal cancer appeared in an article in real life magazine Full House.
Mrs Watson denies any wrongdoing and told reporters she was confident her name would be cleared when approached on Friday afternoon.
An Essex Police spokesperson confirmed: 'A woman has been arrested in connection with a police investigation into a charity collection.
'A 22-year-old woman was arrested at her home in Billericay on suspicion of fraud by false representation.
'The woman was later bailed until August 6 pending further enquiries.'
