High hopes: British Olympic high jump hopeful Robbie Grabarz unveils a gold standard body
The 24-year-old became the first British man to win a European Championship gold medal for 62 years when he cleared 2.31m in Helsinki just two weeks ago - 40 centimetres above his own height.
No Brit has won this title since 1950 when Glaswegian Alan Paterson, using a now-extinct technique known as ‘western roll’, took the European gold in Brussels with a best jump of 1.96, four centimetres less than his own height.
Grabarz is now ranked joint second in the world in his sport - only Russian Ivan Ukhov has jumped higher, and only by a centimetre - and is one of Britain's best Olympic hopes.
Championships and come the autumn his Lottery funding was withdrawn. ‘I couldn’t argue with that. I didn’t deserve it,’ he said.
His coach asked him to make up his mind whether he wanted to continue.
He said: 'I’d been doing it since I was 11, and I was 24, and it was like, "You are no longer a junior, you have no more excuses". I’d had a really bad year, not improving, just average, and I thought, "I don’t want this happening again".'
Bjorn Borg boxer shorts are available from Selfridges for £23.
