It comes as police yesterday dragged a headless female torso from a canal in the east end of London, feared to be the 29-year-old.

Her brother Tony, 35, was arrested today and is in custody at an east London police station, Sky News said.

Police have not confirmed the identity of the suspect.

Earlier Mr McCluskie had told how he had last seen his sister at home last Thursday afternoon.

He told the press his sister's disappearance is 'completely' out of character and that she had never been missing before.

He added: 'We are going out of our mind with worry. She is a bubbly, outgoing, strong and independent woman.'

Officers were alerted after a member of the public noticed something suspicious floating in the water.

There has so far been no link established between the disappearance of Miss McCluskie, who played Kerry Skinner in 2001, and yesterday's find, which came after police had expressed extreme concern for the actress's welfare.

A Metropolitan spokesman said: 'A body was found in Regent's Canal near Broadway Market in East London at 2:40pm.

'Enquiries are underway to establish the identity of the deceased. A post-mortem will be scheduled to ascertain the cause of death.

'Pending that post mortem we will be treating the death as unexplained.'

Friends and relatives of Miss McCluskie have launched a frantic search around London’s East End for the petite brunette, who appeared in more than 30 episodes of the flagship BBC soap.

Her character arrived in Albert Square as a friend of Zoe Slater and the great niece of the late Ethel Skinner. She briefly dated Robbie Jackson and got him to propose to her.

Former EastEnders stars including Martine McCutcheon and Brooke Kinsella have begun assisting the search on Twitter.

More than 100 people carried out a search around the local area, placing posters in shops and pubs and handing out leaflets last night, after Miss McCluskie was last seen at her home in Bethnal Green last Thursday.

The torso was found in Regent’s Canal on Tuesday afternoon. Police frogmen were expected to continue to search for body parts today.

The discovery was made in a busy area of the canal packed with houseboats, close to the popular Broadway Market.

The young actress was last seen in a Hackney kebab shop after a night out.

Lockdown: The McCluskie home undergoes a complete search as worried friends and family await new

She was in hospital before Gemma's disappearance and neighbours fear the recent revelations will have an even greater impact on her health.

A neighbour, who did not want to be named, said: 'Their mother is very sick with brain cancer. She is in and out of hospital but was back in when Gemma disappeared.

'I can't think what this will do to her, it is absolutely sad, so surreal it is happening.'

Neighbour of 20 years John, who did not wish to reveal his full name, described Miss McCluskie as a ‘happy-go-lucky girl’ who had never boasted about her TV past.

He said: 'She didn’t deserve this. None of the family deserved this.

'I really don’t think her mum will recover from her disappearance and Tony’s arrest.

'We were totally shocked when she disappeared, it is so out of character. Now all this... shock doesn’t begin to describe it.'

The torso was found in Regent’s Canal on Tuesday afternoon. The discovery was made in a busy area of the canal packed with houseboats, close to the popular Broadway Market.

An arm believed to belong to the EastEnders actress whose headless torso was found floating in a canal has been discovered in the same spot.
The limb was spotted yesterday by a British Waterways employee - two weeks after 29-year-old Gemma McCluskie's mutilated body was recovered close to Hackney's famous Broadway Market, in East London.
Divers have been searching Regent's Canal in a bid to find her remaining missing body parts.
A Scotland Yard spokesman said: 'Police were called at 9.35am yesterday to reports of an arm found in the Regent's Canal in Hackney.
'Officers attended and recovered the limb close to the Broadway Market stretch of the canal.
'We await further tests to determine identity, but at this stage it is believed to be connected to the murder of Gemma McCluskie.'
The actress was last seen returning to her home in Hackney, which she shared with her brother Tony, who now stands accused of killing his sister.
Her dismembered body was found after she had been missing for a week after attending the opening of the new £650million Royal London Hospital in nearby Whitechapel on March 1.
