| A 27-year-old mother pleaded guilty today to voluntary manslaughter after her infant son died from drinking breast milk laced with methamphetamine last year. An autopsy on six-week-old Michael Acosta III found that the infant died of ‘methamphetamine toxicity’ on Nov. 21, 2010 in Humboldt County, California. Prosecutors initially tried to charge Maggie Wortman with murder, saying she should have known the dangers of breastfeeding after smoking the drug. But a judge threw out the charge, saying there was insufficient evidence to support it. According to the Times-Standard, Wortman’s medical providers refused to speak with investigators as to whether or not they warned her about the dangers of meth and breast feeding, citing doctor-patient confidentiality.
